On Saturday, August 11th, 2018, YFPA hosted a panel discussion with two of our past scholarship award winners as part of the Leadership Pavilion at Pistahan 2018 Parade and Festival, held at the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. Joining the YFPA panel were 2016 & 2017 scholarship award winners, Krystal and Alyanna. Krystal is now a third-year sociology major with a minor in race and resistance at San Francisco State University. She is from the East Bay and graduated from Encinal High School in Alameda, CA. Alyanna is now a second-year physiology science major at UCLA. She is from the East Bay and graduated from Hercules High School in Hercules, CA. Panelists shared their experiences on selecting colleges, majors, first year college life and their favorite college experiences to date. Below is a short excerpt from the panel discussion: YFPA Host: How did you select the college you wanted to attend? And what were the factors you were considering in making this choice? Krystal: So, for me, I currently attend San Francisco State University. My process for selecting a school is considering how good a program is. I’m a sociology major and heard the sociology program at SFSU is really good. I also took into consideration that SFSU is the first and only college with ethnic studies in the nation. Alyanna: I lived in the Bay Area my whole life. I really wanted to go to college somewhere different and a little bit further away from home, so I decided on UCLA. It’s a pretty great school and it’s close enough to home where I can drive or just a plane ride away. I also visited UCLA before I applied to colleges and I really liked the majors offered. They also have a pretty large Filipino community there, so it feels like a home away from home. Thank you to both Krystal and Alyanna for coming back to share their college experiences with us. We are so proud of our scholarship winners and are looking forward to hearing more on their progress through college and beyond. The Pistahan Parade and Festival celebrated its 25th year in San Francisco August 11 -12 in the Yerba Buena Center in the South of Market district. Pistahan SF is every second weekend of August, thousands of people get to celebrate, learn, eat and experience Filipino culture. The South of Market District has been officially commissioned as the Pilipinas Cultural District by the city of San Francisco.
